Somalia is experiencing a humanitarian crisis driven by conflict, displacement, and acute food insecurity.
Decades of conflict have displaced millions and left many in need of humanitarian assistance. Food insecurity and malnutrition are widespread, particularly among children -- and estimated 1.7 million of them in 2024. This is primarily a result of catastrophic drought followed by life-threatening flooding.
The crisis has also disrupted education and healthcare services, leaving many without access to essential services and support. Somalia faces a significant protection crisis, with many civilians being subjected to human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and torture.
The population is also experiencing disease outbreaks such as measles and cholera – the latter of which has led to at least 54 casualties in just the first quarter of 2024, mostly killing young children. Psychosocial support is required for recovery in Somalia.
Hormuud Telecom, a company in Somalia, developed a mobile money platform called EVC Plus which features a humanitarian portal to facilitate the secure and direct transfer of cash to people in need, particularly in regions affected by drought and conflict. Aid agencies can send money instantly to vulnerable individuals, without intermediaries, featuring a multi-level authorization system to prevent the misuse of funds. This critical infrastructure enables quick and traceable cash transfers, allowing donors to meaningfully contribute to relief.
