Sudan is experiencing a humanitarian crisis driven by political conflict for the past 5 years, displacement, and food insecurity.
Armed conflicts and political instability have displaced millions and disrupted access to basic services. Sudan is experiencing some of the world's highest malnutrition rates, particularly in conflict-affected areas. 1 in 3 people are acutely food insecure. Border and port blockages make it nearly impossible for delivery of international aid.
Violence in October 2024 alone has displaced 46,700 people. The crisis hinders education and healthcare, leaving many, especially children, vulnerable to disease and exploitation. Sudan is also facing a significant protection crisis, with many civilians being subjected to human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and torture.
The population in Sudan is also experiencing an outbreak of cholera, hepatitis, and other communicable diseases. Malaria is also a concern in the region. Psychosocial support is urgently required for refugees.
Major African mobile provider MTN, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has implemented a mobile money service called MoMo in Sudan. Returning migrants are aided in re-establishing their livelihoods amid a cash shortage. This service is part of a pilot project that supports up to 2,000 returnees who are starting small businesses, allowing them to pay their suppliers directly through MoMo. The project emphasizes economic reintegration for sustainable return.
