Sudan is experiencing a profound humanitarian crisis driven by ongoing civil war, widespread displacement, severe food insecurity, and public health emergencies.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal civil war, leading to the displacement of millions and the devastation of critical infrastructure. This conflict has severely disrupted access to essential services, including healthcare and clean water, exacerbating the humanitarian emergency.

The nation faces alarming levels of food insecurity. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Famine Review Committee reported that many are at risk of starvation, with more than half of the population experiencing acute food insecurity.

Public health crises compound the situation, notably a cholera outbreak in White Nile State that resulted in over 65 deaths, affecting 2,700 individuals. The collapse of water infrastructure due to attacks has forced residents to rely on unsafe water sources, heightening the spread of waterborne diseases.

Humanitarian efforts are severely hampered by funding cuts, leading to the closure of life-saving programs such as community kitchens and health centers. This has left millions without access to essential services, further deepening the crisis.

Local initiatives, such as the establishment of Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs) by Sudanese citizens, have become crucial in providing food, shelter, medical aid, and education. These grassroots efforts highlight a shift towards locally-led humanitarian aid amid the conflict.

The international community continues to call for humanitarian access and increased support to address the immense needs of the Sudanese population.

Private Sector Engagement

MTN

Major African mobile provider MTN, in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has implemented a mobile money service called MoMo in Sudan. Returning migrants are aided in re-establishing their livelihoods amid a cash shortage. This service is part of a pilot project that supports up to 2,000 returnees who are starting small businesses, allowing them to pay their suppliers directly through MoMo. The project emphasizes economic reintegration for sustainable return.
