Lebanon is experiencing a humanitarian crisis due to violence, economic collapse, political instability, and the impact of the Syrian and Palestinian refugee crisis.
An economic collapse in the past decade and the lack of a stable government has led to widespread poverty and unemployment, severely impacting livelihoods. The presence of over a million Syrian refugees has further strained resources, leading to increased tensions and humanitarian needs. The Beirut port explosion in August 2020 further exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, causing significant damage to infrastructure and displacing thousands of people.
In late 2024, cross-border violence increased dramatically, displacing nearly 1 in every 6 people in Lebanon. Over 4,200 people were killed in a period of three months. Ground invasions and missile attacks have destabilized livelihoods and destroyed infrastructure from southern Lebanon to Beirut, but a formal ceasefire now holds.
The healthcare system is completely overwhelmed. Psychosocial support for all refugees and Lebanese people in the region is needed.
Nestlé contributed significantly to the relief efforts following the Beirut port explosion, supporting over 5,000 families through partnerships with local NGOs and global campaigns, securing $100k in donations for the Lebanese Red Cross, and providing substantial food assistance. Additionally, the company helped rebuild pediatric hospital wards, recycle glass debris from the explosion, refurbish kitchens, and provide financial support to affected employees, totaling over $1 million in aid.
