Myanmar

Myanmar continues to face a deepening humanitarian crisis characterized by ongoing conflict, widespread displacement, and severe restrictions on access to essential services, compounded by the recent devastating earthquake in March 2025.

Type of Crises Complex Emergency – Conflict, Displacement, Natural Disaster
Number of People Affected 19.9 million
Immediate High-Level Needs Agriculture, Food, Water, Construction, Health, Education, Sanitation Services, Protection & Human Rights

Since the military coup in 2021, Myanmar has been embroiled in persistent conflict, leading to the internal displacement of over 3.5 million people by the end of 2024.

The military's crackdown on opposition groups has severely disrupted access to healthcare, education, and other essential services. Ethnic minorities, particularly the Rohingya, continue to face systemic violence and discrimination, with many residing in overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh under precarious conditions.

The healthcare system remains critically under-resourced, struggling to address the needs of those affected by ongoing violence and displacement. Food insecurity is escalating, with the World Food Programme warning of a staggering 15 million people expected to face hunger in 2025, up from 13.3 million in 2024.

Humanitarian access is severely restricted, impeding the delivery of much-needed aid to vulnerable populations. The international community continues to call for increased support to address the immense needs of the Myanmar population.

In addition, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck on March 28th, killing over 3,700 people and affecting approximately 17 million. The disaster caused an estimated US$11 billion in damages—around 14% of Myanmar’s GDP—and required international humanitarian assistance, further worsening the situation.
